Focuses the student upon the importance of developing accurate payroll and personnel records. APS101 Applied Medical Science I 2 Cr. Hrs.
Introduces a medical vocabulary building system for those entering the healthcare field. Students will learn to incorporate terms dealing with basic anatomy and physiology, disease processes, standard diagnostic and treatment procedures, common medications and abbreviations through the recognition and combination of medical prefixes, suffixes and other vocabulary elements from which hundreds of medical terms are derived with particular emphasis on skeletal and muscular systems, pathology, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune systems, radiology and diagnostic procedures.

CAT101 Computer-Aided Transcription 2 Cr. Hrs.

CL100 Clinical Internship 5 Cr. Hrs.
Provides on site medical transcription experience. Students will learn to implement transcription knowledge by performing actual medical transcription assignments during a 150 hour internship at an actual medical transcription facility.

Presents an introduction of network types and components. Students will learn to distinguish between various network configurations, delineate wiring and cabling, confront network security and ethical issues, recount the benefits and limitations of several network types, and implement and administer a simple Local Area Network (LAN).

Details the use of network software menu utilities and provides opportunities to formulate solutions for a variety of networking difficulties. ICT101 Insurance Claims Theory 6 Cr. Hrs.
Demonstrates the procedures for completing medical and dental insurance forms used in the health and allied care fields. Students will learn to interpret and apply CPT (procedure) and ICD (diagnosis) coding for Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance claims, implement database functions for HCFA and OASIS forms, and develop procedures for the filing and follow-up of insurance claims.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the various roles of the medical assistant in the health care industry. Topics include an orientation to the medical profession and the duties of professional medical assisant. Skills presented in the course are collecting patient data; vital signs; use of the AED (automated External Defibrillator); Adult, Child, and infant CPR, and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (Conscious and Unconscious). This course prepares the student for the administrative duties of a medical assistant in a physician’s office, hospital, or medical facility. Students will spend six weeks in an assigned clinical setting under the supervision of a physician, nurse practitioner or RN where they will apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired in the classroom. Presents international diagnoses codes for all body structures and systems. Introduces basic principles of machine shorthand. Students will learn to produce acceptable brief forms, phrases, writing by sound, transcription from shorthand notes, and machine keyboard mastery. A minimum competency of 96 percent accuracy at 50 words per minute is required and is credited as follows:

  • MS101A - Machine immersion, position, paper, keyboard familiarization, definitive writing, frequently occurring words and inflected endings (6 credits);
  • MS101B - Substitute letters and principle presentation through words ending with consonants not on the right side of the machine (6 credits);
  • MS101C - Substitute letters and principle presentation continued through compound words and prefixes to general word outlines (6 credits).

Simulates situations comparable to the State Certified Shorthand Reporters Examination. Students will lean to combine the necessary procedures and qualifications for the statement of proficiency required by the State of Texas. Student must pass two sets of tests dictated within one class hour. Sets consist of five-minute tests over unfamiliar material as follows: One Q&A at 225 wpm with a minimum of 96 percent accuracy, one Jury Charge at 200 wpm with a minimum of 96 percent accuracy, and one Literary at 180 wpm with a minimum of 96 percent accuracy. The student must pass two of these single sitting sets in order to get credit for this course, take the state exam, and receive a diploma from Iverson Business School. A minimum competency of 96 percent accuracy is necessary to receive credit as follows:
